Road trip

Road trips were ruined by Thelma & Louise: the unfavourable ratio of Brad Pitt to serial killer is a roadside motel discovery most would prefer not to make. Add overzealous parents who planned family trips in wood-panelled wagons and played I Spy With My Little Eye to avert backseat sibling mutiny … well you can hear the collective sigh of understanding.

But I’d like to advise an amendment.

I met a couple who used to shut their eyes, point to somewhere on a map and just drive there. Never mind that you could reach anywhere in the country within five hours; that was beside the point. It was the unknown adventure that appealed: the throw-reason-and-cost-of-petrol-to-the-wind-and-see-what-happens mentality that reignited a road trip curiosity.

It’s a pity I can’t read maps. And that I don’t own a car. But as a seasoned backseat driver and battler of all things car-sick related I can offer two steadfast rules.

One: avoid where possible a road trip that involves public transport.

Two: when it comes to food, one hand on the wheel, one hand on your meal. (Interpret as you will.)
